“Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over
all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim
the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” Lk 9:1-6
Now we might say this quote has direct relevance to the
Sacrament of Holy Orders, in which the bishops and priests,
the successors of the Apostles, have been (summoned and) ordained
by God to offer all of us the Sacraments of Reconciliation,
Anointing of the Sick and the faculty of preaching
the Gospel (as well as deacons).
And that is true.
And it is quite a beautiful gift that Jesus has given
to the “Chosen” twelve and to the Church.
But just suppose (and God forbid we ever actually get to that point),
suppose we did not have the Ordained to offer those Sacraments to us any more.
You know, we do have a shortage of priests. And the Christian world is
under siege by the evil one, who would like nothing less than
to see all of us gone.
Well you know what?
Just by our baptisms we ourselves are ordained, as well,
into the common and holy priesthood of Jesus. We have been given,
not only the ability, but the desire to read the Bible,
the Good News, ourselves.
We have been given the ability to both physically and spiritually
heal our brothers and sisters through modern medical science
and through our compassion for one another.
And we CAN dispel the demons of depression and loneliness,
of hopelessness and evil works just by speaking the words
of Christ’s love to each other, by caring.
And Jesus calls us all to do just that.
So REJOICE, beloved!
And then, GO and help others do the same!
For we are loved, beyond imagination.
