(The Annunciation to Zechariah)
On the sixth day before Christmas my True Love gave to me . . .
a message so astounding that for nine months –
without speech I would be.
An angel came to Zechariah, the husband of Elizabeth (who would later
become the parents of John the Baptist) and announced her pregnancy.
He said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.“
“I am Gabriel, who stand before God.
I was sent to speak to you and to announce
to you this good news.
But now you will be speechless and unable to talk
until the day these things take place,
because you did not believe my words, which
will be fulfilled at their proper time.” Lk 1:5-25
Did you ever question the plausibility of something, beloved,
and then miss a “once in a lifetime” opportunity?
We seem to do it all the time, because we’re so conditioned
to mistrust almost everything . . .
“Now, what are they trying to sell?”
“What do they want out of us?” “What is the cost?”
Here in Missouri, they call us the “Show Me” state,
because someone in our historical past
just would not believe unless he
was first shown.
And that’s all well and good for the the sake of safety,
for the sake of self-preservation.
But some things we just have to take on FAITH.
I think if I was confronted with an Angel,
I might tend to believe whatever he had to say,
just out of fear or astonishment.
Or else, I might as well commit myself to the loony bin.
But thanks be to God – we’ve got lots and lots of
examples in our Bible of those who did listen and reaped
the benefits – without loosing their speech, or sight, or life:
like Noah and Abraham, Moses and Elijah.
What about you, beloved?
Do you believe that the pretty little Infant in the dirty old manger
came to SAVE YOU for eternity?
That IS exactly what JESUS came to do!
