(The Annunciation to Mary)
On the fifth day before Christmas my True Love gave to me . . .
a choice most blessed – made by Holy Mother Mary.

The angel Gabriel came to Mary to inform her that she was to conceive
and bear a son who’s name would be Jesus, along with some pretty
spectacular pronouncements about him.

Olivia Hussey annunciationBut Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”

And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born will be called holy,
the Son of God.”
  Lk 1:26-38

OK, Mary thought, I’m not even going to touch the “spectacular” part
of this announcement.  All that stuff about this boy being
the Son of the Most High,” and that
the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.

No, let’s just get down to the nitty gritty of how all this
is going to happen in the first place.

Mary questioned the “down to earth” reality of the claim,
the same way Zechariah did in yesterday’s reading.
Fortunately, Gabriel was in a little better mood with Mary’s inquiry.

You see, Mary wasn’t just going to deliver a messenger
(even though John was a very important messenger).
Mary was going to be the very “ark” of God Himself.
And the means of that occurring (through the Holy Spirit),
was the least of God and Gabriel’s concern.
All they were looking for was an “OK” from Mary!

And that’s exactly what they got!

We call it Mary’s (great) fiat.  Mary said,
Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.
No ‘buts‘, no ‘what if’s‘, no ‘let me check with my mom first.

Mary offered it ALL!

Knowing it would upset her parents. Knowing she would be rejected by her
friends and community.   Knowing she’d probably lose her new husband, Joseph.
Even at the risk of capital punishment (death),
Mary said YES
to God.

The absolute ULTIMATE in Faith.
The result of which brought SALVATION
to all of US, beloved.

And His Name is JESUS!
