(Ash Wednesday, A)
Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God.
So, why do we fast in the Season of Lent? Well, it speaks of fasting in the Bible as a means of coming closer to God. A way of reminding ourselves of our dependence on God. A way of reminding ourselves to keep pure, to avoid sin. But the Bible also says in multiple places, as well as in the Words of Jesus, that if our fasting is done to bring attention to ourselves from others – then that fasting is not only useless towards God, but it’s just the opposite of why we fast in the first place. It’s not a pride thing, it’s a humility thing – just between God and us!
St. Paul implored the members of the Church in Corinth, “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he (God) made him (Jesus) to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him (Jesus).”
2 Cor 5:20-6:2
BE RECONCILED, beloved. God Loves you!
Jesus said to his disciples: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.”
Mt 6:1-6, 16-18
A blessed Lent to you, beloved.
