(St. Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church)
A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains
and crushing rocks before the LORD—
but the LORD was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake—
but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake there was fire—
but the LORD was not in the fire. 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16
So when they blame the LORD for all the calamities of our world, remember it was not He who disobeyed and left us. He is always there, waiting for us to come back. He is there to comfort us when all those calamities do happen.
All we need do is listen for His Whispers!
Jesus said, “I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” Mt 5:27-32
So when they say “the Church” is evil and wrong to chastise us for divorce, remarriage and breaking our Communion with her, guess they may just as well blame Jesus who professed that chastisement first. Point is, adultery is a sin against one of God’s Ten Commandments given to Moses. It dates back pretty far. And God knows that broken unions hurt a whole lot more and longer than the little bit of hurt that reconciliation may cause. And God loves us too much to see us hurt ourselves. But He won’t be the one to stop us, just as we can’t truly stop our own kids from not listening to us and hurting themselves. The best we can do is warn and warn and warn, just as God warns us.
All we need do is listen for God’s Whispers!
Then the consequences for our doings are our own reward or punishment.
Blessed be God our comfort and our strength!
