10-06-14 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

October 6, 2014
A scholar of the Law asked Jesus,
“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law?  How do you read it?” He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” Lk 10:25-37

Of course, the scholar knew the answer.  Was he testing Jesus?  Or was he looking for another loophole to find his way to heaven without meeting all the requirements?  Loving God was a given – but to what extent did he have to love his neighbor?

So he asked Jesus again – and who is my neighbor?  And Jesus answered, beyond the law, and beyond even your own common sense – your neighbor is ANYONE who needs help that you could offer.  Regardless of race, religion, or creed.  Even beyond the law’s requirements (which the scholars and religious leaders strictly upheld) – if someone needs your help – you show mercy and offer it – BECAUSE – that is what God does for you.

That’s neighbor – and that’s Love!
