12-20-14 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

December 20, 2014
The Angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”  But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”  And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”  Lk 1:26-38

Usually in the Bible when an angel appears to anyone, there is great fear.  Can you just imagine AN ANGEL appearing to you?!!  It’s not something we experience every day.  And it is, by no means, natural.  It’s actually SUPER-natural.  And we don’t see supernatural things very often any more.  And if we did, we would certainly keep it to ourselves, unless we like straight jackets and unfurnished rooms.

So it was pretty interesting that Mary casually responded, just like Zechariah did in yesterday’s reading, with a question.  “Yeah, just how is that going to happen?”  “I’m too old.”  Or, “How can I get pregnant if I’m not even married?”

The Angel kindly reminded both Mary and Zechariah that this is NOT Natural.  This is God they’re dealing with.  And our simple thoughts and wisdom are child’s play when we’re dealing with God.

So, as we mentioned yesterday, beloved, IF we can let go of all those preconceptions of naturalness and “Let God” have the reins, just like Mary, we might be surprised when the power of the MOST HIGH, the Holy Spirit overshadows us!

It promises to be quite a trip!

And praise God that Mary was willing to take it!
