When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. They asked what the child’s name would be and both Elizabeth and (the still mute) Zechariah answered “John.” And the Scripture says, “all were amazed.” When Zechariah immediately began to speak the Scriptures say, “Then fear came upon all their neighbors,” Lk 1:57-66
That’s a lot of emotions in a very short period of time. I think the people were just, really confused. With Zechariah seeing an angel of God, then going mute, then “old” Elizabeth having a child, and both of them agreeing on a name that seemed to be pulled out of thin air, and finally Zechariah talking again. It was just too much for them to grasp. Joy, and then amazement, followed by fear.
It was just more than they could grasp.
How well can we grasp that EVENT that happened in the months to follow? The EVENT that we will celebrate in just two days, Christmas. You see, it’s not about a love song. It’s not about a fat guy in a red suit. It’s not about twinkling stars, snowmen, bells, trees, lights, stores or gifts.
It’s about OUR God becoming a human person to show us the way to heaven.
It’s about the intense and immeasurable value of ALL life, even infant children, even those yet to be born. It’s about a God who cares so much about us that He would stoop as low as to become an “ant,” and then allow the other ants to kill him, when with a blink of His eye He could have had us all evaporated!
So, yes, it IS about a love song. But not a song about two ants with chemical attractions toward each other. It’s about the love that the very Creator of those ants has for them that’s beyond anything we can possibly EVER grasp.
The Joy, the amazement, the fear!
It’s ours as well, beloved!
So sit back and revel in it . . .
for ours IS an AWESOME God!
