Beloved: Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came through water and Blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and Blood. The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth. So there are three who testify, the Spirit, the water, and the Blood, and the three are of one accord. 1 Jn 5:5-13
OH, don’t you just LOVE John’s first letter! There is absolutely no question about life and faith and salvation. And it’s all perfectly logical – to John! And what about us, beloved? Do we feel that certain, that absolute about our faith?
John proves his point through this three-fold testimony. The water of Jesus’ baptism we will hear about on Sunday – where John describes the descent of the Holy Spirit like a dove, as Jesus arose from the baptismal water of the Jordan River. We can also consider the water that flowed from the pierced side of Jesus on the cross. The water that consists of 55-65% of our body weight. The water that we cannot survive without. It’s life!
And then there is the Blood. The blood of Jesus poured out for us. The innocent blood of the Lamb of God sacrificed in atonement for our sins. It is testimony of the great love God has for us, despite our sinfulness.
And then there is the Holy Spirit him or herself. Poured out upon the disciples at Pentecost, we receive the Holy Spirit’s lifelong presence with us in our Baptism, strengthened in our Confirmation, and then He’s there every time we call upon Him.
God’s love is so complete, so immeasurable and so unconditional, all we need do is recognize that absolute and certain fact, and OH how wonderful this life can be (despite the difficult times)!!!
