06-19-15 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

June 19, 2015
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.  But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.  “The lamp of the body is the eye.  If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”  Mt 6:19-23

If I look at today’s Gospel and reflect on what it’s really saying, I find myself feeling totally guilty of not being that person that Jesus is trying to teach us to be.  And I think, what Jesus is trying to teach us, is that – if we devote our lives to focusing on all that’s wrong in the world . . . the wars, the weather, the traffic, the nasty co-workers, the bad food, the weeds, the bugs, the sickness, and on and on, then, as Jesus said, the light within us will soon turn into the very darkness that we’ve immersed ourselves in.  And that very darkness will sicken and deteriorate us, until there’s nothing left but ashes.

And in the process, who did we help, and who did we hurt?

I think it’s a lot easier to work on the “not storing up earthly treasures” part of Jesus’ words today, especially when we’ve lived through the losses of homes, and friends, and even loved ones.

But to keep our focus OFF – all the bitterness of the world around us, is a little more difficult, especially when we’re showered by that bitterness on the TV, and in the newspapers, and on the internet.

So what do we do?

Well maybe instead of looking down at the world all the time, we need to look up at the sky once in a while.  Beyond the rain and the clouds, “Oh, there’s a Rainbow.”  Past the smoke and the smog, “Oh, there’s a Snow capped mountain or there, an Aurora borealis.”  To really hear the Singing of the birds, and the Chirping of the crickets.  To smell the cleanliness of the Rain-freshened-air.  The Joy of a happily married couple.  The unashamed dependency of a beautifully smiling Newborn.

You see, God sends us all kinds of Lights to fill us with hope and brighten the darkness.  All we need to do – is look for it.

And then share it!

Happy anniversary my beloved, Mary Ann!
I love you!!!

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”
