(Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles)
Jesus said to His disciple, “you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Mt_16:13-19
We often tend to focus on the binding and loosing part of this quote in reference to the Church’s faculty of offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation. However, I think equally, or even more significant, is the statement that the “gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against” Christ’s Church. She may be attacked from the outside. She may be attacked on the inside. But she will never fall. She WILL prevail. So when the world around us continues to fall to the evils of legalizing all kinds of immoral and unhealthy acts, and then blames the Church for being unbending and unjust, and when the consequences of that immorality begin to come to fruition, please don’t come back and blame the Church again. Instead, maybe its time for a little conversion. And then that Sacrament of Reconciliation will come in handy. As God’s Church, and according to His teachings, we Love the people, always! We just don’t agree with all their actions – as the Bible tells us!
