(Seventeenth Sunday Ordinary Time B)
When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone. Jn 6:1-15
If someone was so happy with us, beloved, that they wanted to give us a promotion or recommend us to all their friends, or even go as far as making us the next president, what would we do? Would we go off and hide? Or would we pray to the Lord asking what we should do? Or would it be our second nature not to puff ourselves up and allow all that glory? Guess it might depend on the longer term outcome. If we were to allow it for our own glory – then, it’s probably not a good idea. If we were to allow it because we could see how it might benefit others, then maybe it’s something worth considering. If we see how the outcome could potentially be bad for others; Jesus knew that God had other plans for him, then there’s no question, it’s a good time to go into hiding. Sometimes, beloved, being King is just not in the cards, just not in God’s bigger plan for us. And if that’s the case, let’s find out what it is that He does desire for us. Who knows, it might even be better than worldly kingship. It might be – being the best Child of His that we could possibly be!
