(Nineteenth Sunday Ordinary Time, B)
Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Jn 6:41-51
LIFE! Jesus came to live, to offer life and to give life for eternity to those who believe in Him. Why do we have such a hard time, beloved, with this thing we call life? We greedily cling to our own life and are free and happy to destroy any other life around us. Why can we not understand that ALL life is a gift from God, and that we have no right whatsoever to take that life from anyone else – even those who forget how to behave responsibly.
Think about it. If we were to smile at another person, what are the odds that they might smile back at us? Of course, if we’re living in NYC or Baghdad those odds might be a little lower than here in mid-Missouri. But still, the offering of love and peace most likely will bring more love and peace back to us (not guaranteed, but most likely). That’s the sharing of life. But if we selfishly frown and growl and hate and kill – you know what, that’s probably what we’ll get back as well.
Jesus is offering us Life. And that life comes through Him, through Love! Jesus IS the bread of life. He is the epitome of LOVE! And He’s asking us to COME to Him and to SHARE Him with everyone we meet. And then, we will TRULY Live!
