Jesus said, “everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.” Mt_19:23-30
There are people who will give up all they have for another fix of an addiction; be it alcohol or drugs, gambling or sports, power or fame . . . And in the end, what good does it do them? They’ll die of abuse, suffer in poverty or loss, or wind up being an unknown slave of others. If we tie our futures, our efforts and our sacrifices to worldly treasures, beloved, it will all be blown away like the wind in time.
But if we tie those sacrifices to the Lord, even though we may not experience worldly wonders, we WILL be rewarded many times over, as Jesus tells us, in the Kingdom to come. If we can keep our focus on the longer term – on Eternity, it will make the suffering of the ‘now’ all the lighter. And sometimes, we may even see the reward for our effort, for our love, for our sacrifice in tiny but overwhelmingly beautiful reflections that come from the faces of other people in this life! That’s Jesus shining back to us! With the blink of an eye, the smile of a child, the breathtaking sunset, the unspoken thank you, for the sake of the Name, it’s ALL worth it!
