Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. . . .
Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.” Jn_17:11b-19
As Jesus continues His prayer to His Father today, it begins to get a little heavy. But there are certain very interesting Trinitarian facts that are obvious in Jesus’ prayer. First He says that His Name, Jesus, is His Father’s Name, that was given to Him. They are ONE. And then His prayer asks His Father to keep His disciples (safe) in that same Name – so that He and the disciples, and the Father, through the Holy Spirit will ALL be ONE. Yes, that Name of Jesus unites us all – as ONE!
Next, Jesus asks His Father to consecrate His disciples in Truth. That means to make them sacred or holy, dedicated to God! And He explains that Truth to mean the “Word” of God (the Father) that Jesus spent three years teaching His disciples, and that we find in the Sacred Scriptures recorded by the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).
Finally, Jesus, as God, consecrates Himself, so that in His Trinitarian ONENESS with His disciples, they may be consecrated as well.
This all brings to us, incredible, actually indescribable HOPE. Through our love for Jesus and our consecration in the Truth (that we learn through the Scriptures) we become ONE with the apostles, with Jesus, with the Father, and with one another through the uniting power and love of the Holy Spirit.
And IN that Oneness, we are saved! We are gifted with Eternal Life from God. OK, maybe that IS a little heavy for us now. But just hang in there beloved. Keep praying, keep reading that Truth and one day it will all make perfect sense. It TRULY is worth it!
