(St. Peter Chrysologus, Bishop and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus said, “Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” Mt_5:10
In today’s Scripture readings we hear how the people wanted to kill the Prophet Jeremiah because he was telling them that what they were doing was wrong in God’s eyes.
In our Gospel reading, Herod recalls how he had John the Baptist beheaded because John insisted that Herod’s adultery was wrong in God’s eyes as well.
Jesus was sent by God to let us all know that it’s important to do what is right in God’s eyes. And if we do, we will be rewarded with eternal life with God, because God loves us so incredibly much. They killed Jesus too!
So what about us, beloved? Are we willing to stand up for God’s righteousness? Are we willing to die for it? If so, then Jesus says, “Blessed” are we!
