09-27-16 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

(St. Vincent de Paul, Priest)
. . . they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.  When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”  Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.   Lk_9:51-56

Three lessons:

  1. Not everyone welcomes you; even if you are the Son of God.  Even if you can do life saving miracles.  And even if you’ve come to save them.  And the corollary is that sometimes even the tiniest preconceptions can blind people to the Graces available to them if they just let go and opened their eyes and their hearts for a moment (eg. as Samaritans, they would have nothing to do with Jews, no matter who they were).
  2. Sometimes bosses can be pretty tough and unpredictable.  Yesterday the disciples thought that a false disciple should be reprimanded and sent away.  Yet, Jesus told them that whoever is not against you is really for you.  (Hmmm, then why are we going through all of this, when we thought that only “certified” disciples could do these things.)  Today, we see that these Samaritans clearly were “against” them.  And yet, even this was not good enough for the disciples to vent their heated revenge.  Seemed there was nothing they could do right!  Maybe Jesus’ point – was not to judge or hate ANYONE, even if they were against you!!!  And He proved that through His own passion and death.
  3. Sometimes when you can’t do anything right; sometimes when it seems the whole world is against you; that’s the time to turn your back and walk away.  They’ll either burn in their own fire or eventually realize what they missed and come running after you (though that’s rarely the case).  But either way, you will not burn along with them!  Just keep on following The Master, beloved, and He will see you through it all!
