(27th Sunday Ordinary Time C)
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” Lk_17:5-10
If your father asks you to take out the trash and you do it, you shouldn’t expect a reward for your obedience, it was expected. If you take out the trash without your father asking, you shouldn’t expect a reward for what is expected of a productive member of the family, it’s what is expected of every member of any society. But if you go beyond all of the common expectations. If you offer your very life for the good of others, if you die in the giving of yourself to help others to live, then you will receive the reward of a truly exceptional son or daughter.
Jesus asks one thing of us: to love one another. Anything less than that is not obedience. Anything equal is merely obedience. And anything beyond is the exceptional: loving enemies, forgiving sins committed against you, loving even the unlovable. Afraid we just can’t do that, beloved? With just a little faith, faith in Jesus, we can move mountains! Have Faith in Love! And your reward will be all the love you ever imagined, and more!
