(Feast of the Dedication of the Basilicas of Ss. Peter and Paul)
Jesus was vehement at publicly expressing His faithfulness to God. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words. Lk_19:45-48
That statement always reminds me of an old stock broker commercial on television. Do you remember the old E.F. Hutton commercials. There in the middle of hundreds or thousands of people all speaking, someone would mention their broker, E.F. Hutton and the entire ball field or cabin of people in an airplane, or classroom of children would all stop speaking and cup their ear to hear what E.F. Hutton had to say.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the same response would happen when someone mentioned, “Well my God is Jesus Christ. And Jesus says . . .” Could you just picture the headling, “When Jesus talks, people listen!” This is what God intended for us to do – to LISTEN to his Words. To “hang on” His every Word.
The Psalmist today says, “How sweet to my palate are your promises, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Ps 119.
And St. John in His Book of Revelation says, I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like sweet honey, Rv_10:8-11
Jesus’ description of God’s love for us, His promise of the Kingdom of God, His command to love one another and the demonstration of His love for us, through His healings, His miracles and His Passion – should be enough for all of us to recognize that His Words are worth a whole lot more than just cupping an ear. They’re worth giving our entire lives in obedience to His Will, to Love God and our neighbor. And then to tell the world that the Kingdom of Heaven could be theirs as well. All it takes is a little listening.
