12-10-16 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!  Sir_48:1-4,9-11

Jesus answered His disciples, “Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.  So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.  Mt_17:9a,10-13

Jesus often equated the Prophet Elijah with John the Baptist.  John was the “messenger.”  John prepared the way for the Messiah.  John’s baptism cleaned the hearts of sinners so that they would be open to receive the Lord.  John was the last and the greatest of the Prophets.

Sirach concludes this passage with the words, “Blessed is he who shall have seen you (Elijah/John) and who falls asleep in your friendship.”  Sir 48:11

Fall asleep, beloved, in your love for the Prophets who prepare us for the coming of the Lord.  Fall asleep in love with Jesus, and you will be blessed indeed!
