(St. Thomas Becket, Bishop and Martyr)
The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Lk_2:22-35
A sign that reveals the thoughts of the heart. LOVE!
If love truly is within our hearts, beloved, then it would hurt to see anyone else hurt. It would pain us to see or hear of the untimely or unnecessary deaths of ANYONE, even our enemy. It would devastate us to see unborn infants brutally killed in the womb, just for the sake of convenience. It would hurt to see how revenge and anger and hatred are promoted in our media, our movies and our music.
Mary had that heart of love. And that heart was pierced when she saw her own Jewish leaders so strongly opposing her son. That heart was pierced when she saw her own son brutally tortured and killed. And that heart taught us what it truly means to love.
Today, let’s reflect on our own heart condition. Is it so filled with love that it hurts to turn on the news? Or is the love in our heart strengthening us, because we know that there is HOPE! And that hope rests totally in our sharing in the love of Jesus – our becoming ONE with Him. That’s the love that He died to teach us about!
