Jesus said to the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Mk_3:1-6
This really gets into a time and a culture that was very different from what we’re used to. And yet, on the other hand, Laws were not created to be ignored or shunned. They were created to keep order and for the benefit of the people. But when keeping those, sometimes outdated, laws begins to be detrimental to the people, all for the sake of the pride of the lawmakers, then there’s a problem with the law, or the lawmakers.
In Jesus’ time the Pharisees were so strict at enforcing those silly laws, that it far exceeded the safety and the benefit of the people, and in some cases actually harmed them. This got Jesus pretty upset. And not with the people, but with their stubborn pride and their unwillingness to listen to reason.
It’s just a good reminder for us too, beloved, to always keep an open mind in whatever it may be that we do, asking if this is good for others or just for me?
