(St. Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr)
Jesus said to his disciples: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
YET . . .
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” Mk_9:41-50
The trick is to never feel so comfortable with our salvation that we become lax in watching out for our own sinfulness. Yes, God loves us. Yes, God will reward us for our righteousness when it’s done for HIS sake and not ours. And Yes, we will be punished for any evil within us. And often it will be the consequence of that evil that will punish us beyond anything that God will do or not do. We truly can be our worst enemy! Love God, beloved, in everything you think and do. And count on Jesus to help guide you in the right direction. He is always there for just that purpose!
