Moses said to the people: “Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom. If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today, loving him, and walking in his ways, and keeping his commandments, statutes and decrees, you will live and grow numerous, and the LORD, your God, will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy. . . .
I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God, heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.” Dt_30:15-20
If we really think about it, we don’t have to give anything up for Lent. We don’t have to beat ourselves up to try to become anything better than we already are. The world around us does a pretty good job at that, all by itself. And if we’re still around to read this, we have to give ourselves (and God) credit for helping us to survive it all.
And we don’t have to name all the trials we go through in life, from deaths of loved ones, to loss of jobs, to hunger, to loneliness, to all the hurts that evil can do to us, because we know them all by heart. And yet, we HAVE survived!
And we don’t have to name all of the graces God has given us, from the beauty of nature, to new human life, to our food, shelter and livelihoods, all it takes is a good look around us.
Yet there is always that CHOICE. All we really have to do, beloved, this Lent and always, is to keep on Choosing Life! And every moment we do, it’s affecting someone else’s life – even if we never realize it!
Thank you Jesus for giving us the Hope!
(and thank you Jesus for giving to us our very beloved sister Patricia, who celebrates her birthday today. Happy BD sis, with God’s blessings always!)
