(Deferred Feast of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. . . . the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Joseph) in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Mt_1:16,18-21,24a
Notice how all of this was preceded by an earlier Jacob (Israel) who also had a son named Joseph, who also saw visions in dreams, who was also sold into bondage (as was Jesus), and who also saved his people (as did Jesus)! We saw this Joseph’s story just three days ago in our Daily Scriptures. It is the beautiful picture of salvation history! God truly does SAVE. Over and over again we see images of salvation through His holy ones.
Today we recognize and venerate the step-father of Jesus. We recognize his obedient listening to God. We recognize his faithfulness to Mary. We venerate the model of fatherhood Joseph was for God’s Son, Jesus, and for all of us! And we thank God for such awesome models in all the saints. May we strive to serve Him as well as they did!
