(5th Sunday of Easter, A; and Mother’s Day)
As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Acts_6:1-7
Guess I’m partial to this Scripture passage, because it describes the institution of the first Deacons. But it also describes the care the Apostles had for the needy, especially widows, and the importance of continuing to spread the Word of Jesus! And that also brings us to the unquestionable importance of mothers in our lives. Without them (and God) we would just not BE. They birth us, they nurture us, they feed us and they support us with their love throughout our entire lives. Blessed be God for mothers!
St. Peter said of mothers and of ALL of us: “You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1_Pt_2:4-9
Blessed be Jesus!
And thank you mom!
