06-17-17 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

June 17, 2017
Jesus said, “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’
Anything more is from the Evil One.”  Mt_5:33-37

As Jesus moves through the Ten Commandments from murder to adultery, and today to lying, He makes the point that none of it reflects that love of neighbor that God wants all of us to have.  In other words, when we make a vow or a promise that we’re not sure we can actually keep, that’s a lie right from the start.  Sure we might try our best to keep our promises but when the window is open to fail, failure will almost be guaranteed.  By restricting our yeses and nos to mean exactly what we said, yes or no,  then that window to fail doesn’t even exist.  Of course, for some of us, it may be really hard to say no.  And when that’s the case, we have to work all the more diligently to be honest with others and with ourselves!  Sometimes no is just the best choice, all around!
