(St. Clare of Assisi, Virgin)
Moses said to the Israelites, “This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever.” Dt_4:32-40
Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Mt_16:24-28
Denial, belief, obedience! Is this “LIFE” worth taking up these crosses? St. Clare believed it was, as did Moses and St. Francis and many, many others long after them. Life eternal! Sounds so much weaker than the unimaginable Kingdom that Jesus promises each of us who believes! Are you willing, beloved, to take up that cross, to risk, to offer it all for something so much better? Not this life of suffering. Not this life of competition, hatred and persecution. Life – of love and compassion and understanding and agreement and peace and light and communion. Life with God forever! This is the promise! No more sin, no more guilt and hurt.
Jesus says, “Come!”
