(29th Sunday Ordinary Time, A)
Jesus responded to His challenge, “Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, “Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” Mt_22:15-21
Sometimes, beloved, we just have to get our priorities straight! What really does belong to me and what belongs to God? Well, when we think about it – WE ourselves belong to God! So that means that all we own (or think we own) really belongs to Him as well.
But, you know what? God really has no need for coins, or cars, or cell phones, or houses. All of that really belongs to the world. And if the hurricanes, or tornadoes, or floods, or droughts, or spiders, or robbers, or sink holes decide that it’s their turn to take over ownership of those things, well who are we to argue! God will give us the resources to start all over again!!! And maybe we’ll even grow from the experience! Praise God. (Though we do pray that it never happens to us. And we pray for the strength of those who have had to endure such tragedies).
And we always remember – that we are His! So we must be very careful with what we do with someone else’s property (God’s), whether it’s ourselves or others! And we always remember that He IS the absolute best caregiver there could be! We are His! And He is ours!
