(St. John of Capistrano, Priest)
Jesus said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Lk_12:13-21
In a life of poverty, it may have seemed that all there was to live for was that inheritance. Maybe the parents saved their whole lives for a relaxing retirement. Maybe they saved in order to pass on some relief on to their kids. Maybe all of that was the last thing on their minds before giving up the ghost. But, boy were those kids counting on that inheritance relief. No job. Food was sparse. Starving kids of their own. It was all there was to look forward to.
And yet Jesus tells them “no.” There’s more to life than just feeding our mouths, playing our video games and watching TV. Jesus tells us to beware of becoming too possessive. Because possessiveness leads to greed and jealousy and resentfulness of others. And it’s really the ‘others’ who are most important to our own lives. It doesn’t mean we need to starve to death, nor have some fun with the life we know. But we just need to keep the physical side of life in perspective with the spiritual, eternal life that we’re promised. That’s the BIG goal! And it’s well worth any suffering we may have to endure to reach it!
