Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.” Lk_12:35-38
We hear a lot of “master” “servant” talk from Jesus. And maybe we’re not as familiar with those roles in our 21st century as the people were back in the time of Jesus. Although, unfortunately a lot of illicit slavery still occurs in our world today.
But if you are wealthy enough to have paid help serve you or your home, you understand how important a good relationship with these people is. And it’s actually the same way in our working world. Though we’re not considered servants and masters or slaves and owners, we really are in those same relationships as well. Our boss may not beat us, but we could be reprimanded, have our pay withheld, or even be fired for “insubordination” if we don’t follow his demands to the letter!
Jesus tells us today that we need to have the same healthy respect for our God. He may seem to be far away at times, but we know that He’s right here watching over us and after us. And we’ll find Him a lot happier to see us if we follow His rules and directions too.
Funny, but maybe it is US who have gone away. And maybe it is time for us to return back to God again! Blessed are we, whom He finds vigilant when we are reunited again!
