Brothers and sisters: I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. Rom_7:18-25a
When evil strikes at us, beloved, where do we stand relative to what St. Paul is saying here? Does the good in us make us act rationally? Or are we quick to strike back, quick to be as evil or bad or worse than whatever (or whoever) it was that upset us?
This battle of spirit with flesh is not an easy battle. It takes constant training, constant contact with the Holy Spirit, constant prayer to Jesus to strengthen us not to act the way our flesh desires, but to act instead, with integrity of heart and in compliance with all that Jesus has taught us. In short, it means we must practice and practice and practice LOVE! Love until love just oozes out from us, even when we’re attacked! God loves us, beloved, even though sometimes we are pretty far from deserving that love. We should try to at least try to love as well!
