(2nd Sunday of Advent, B)
John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Mk_1:1-8
Funny, we say those words every Sunday, beloved! But do we truly realize what we’re actually saying, and do we believe it? “Lord I am not worthy that You should come under my roof . . .” Can we even imagine how unworthy we are? And yet, He comes, and comes, and comes again!
“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” And in that union with the Holy Spirit, beloved, we have the ticket that opens the door, that makes us at least a little worthy! Worthy enough to be called “Children of God!”
When we can recognize our unworthiness before the throne of God, when we can truly mean those words (I am not worthy), then we are just beginning to realize how very, very blessed we really are! And in our response of thanksgiving for all those blessings, we give back – to all His other children, who are not worthy either, because love begets love.
Blessed be God, beloved! Blessed be His Holy Name! And blessed are we who are called together in Love, as His children!
