Sirach wrote, How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! . . . You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Sir_48:1-4,9-11
Jesus said to His disciples, “I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. Mt_17:9a,_10-13
The ancients believed that the mighty prophet Elijah would one day come back and prepare the way for the coming of the Lord, the Savior, the Chosen One of God. Jesus let His disciples know that John the Baptist is/was that messenger, that reformer. But He also informed them that just as John was imprisoned and killed, so would He be treated the same. And all of this was written in the prophesies of Isaiah and others.
You know, beloved, sometimes it’s hard to see what’s right in front of our faces. When we look to the signs. When we understand the prophesies made and fulfilled, we might just start to believe the truth of the prophesies, the warnings and the hope that Jesus left us with. Our salvation rests in that belief!
