Samuel said to Saul, the King of Israel, “Does the LORD so delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obedience to the command of the LORD? Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams. For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he, too, has rejected you as ruler.” 1_Sm_15:16-23
Obedience trumps sacrifice. Therefore according to Samuel, according to the LORD, the old saying that it’s easier to ask forgiveness than to miss an opportunity (to sin, or disobey, or to presume ignorance), is just not TRUE! It cost Saul his kingship, and in the end it cost him his very life and that of his son! So, we must never stray from obedience to the Lord!
In the same light, Jesus said, “No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.” Mk_2:18-22
Moral being, don’t follow the crowd, beloved, just because they say something is OK. If that OK is sinful, if that OK is in disobedience to the Lord, if that OK is presumptuous, it’s really NOT OK. Jesus is the “new wine.” If we don’t want to ruin the beauty of what God has given us, in ourselves and in our world, we really do need to listen to and follow the advice of Jesus. He is not the old, but the new!
