Fasting? The Lord says: “This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.”
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! Is_58:1-9a
Before we can truly appreciate the stars and the heavens, we have to understand the atmosphere and the smog, and the clouds and the fog. We have to climb down from the mountain tops to the bogs and the city streets, from the mansions to the trailer parks, from the glitter to the slums. When we can understand who we really are and how far we are from the heavens, then we can begin to climb out of the soil and into the air, out of the air and into the space, out of the space and into the universe. And even then we’re still no closer than the soil of our beginnings, relative to God. If we really want to understand God, beloved, we need to begin by understanding one another. We need to begin by helping the needy and sharing their burdens. And out of the darkness of the space we enter, even in the dimness of our own feeble light, there, we will find … God!
