(The Chair of St. Peter, Apostle)
Jesus said, “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Mt_16:13-19
Thus, the supreme authority of the Church on earth had been passed on by Jesus to St. Peter, his Apostle. And Peter passed it on to Pope Linus, then Pope Cletus, Pope Clement and so forth, all the way up to Pope Francis, our present day Pope. These men led our Church, sometimes in good ways, sometimes not so good. But all of them form a sacred lineage going all the way back to Peter and Jesus. We call it Apostolic Succession. And in honor of that sacred lineage we celebrate that position of Bishop in our Church today, by his seat or Cathedra, and the home location of every bishop in the world, his Cathedral. Through these men, we are governed, sanctified through the Sacraments and taught all of the sacred traditions of our faith. Thanks be to God and to Jesus for beginning our organization, our united Body of Christ!
