06-13-18 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

(St. Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church)
Elijah prayed, “Answer me, LORD!  Answer me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God and that you have brought them back to their senses.”  The LORD’s fire came down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dust, and it lapped up the water in the trench. Seeing this, all the people fell prostrate and said, “The LORD is God! The LORD is God!” 1_Kgs_18:20-39

Jesus said, “whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”  Mt_5:17-19

You know, blue is one of my favorite colors.  We see it in the sky on cloudy days.  We see it in wedding dresses.  We see it on doves and carnations, on the stars of our flag, and on the cloth of our altar.  It is such a refreshing color, so clean and so pure.

Well, OK, by now I’m sure that some of you might be wondering if I’m is either color blind or have just totally lost it!  But, if I can convince enough people, that this color (white) IS blue; or make it a law, that from now on, this color must be called “blue,” then, generations from now, this color truly WILL be called “blue.”

And yet, all the while, somewhere among the masses, there will still be small groups of people, who have learned, and believe, the TRUTH about Blue, even though the majority of everyone else is LOST.

Today’s Scriptures speak to us about the Lost and the Found.  You see, beyond the wandering sheep who think that the grass might be greener on the other side of the pasture, sometimes, being Lost is a Place, or a State of Mind, or a Belief System – that someone else has led us TO, or FORCED us to go to.

The Israelites, for example, in the time of Elijah the Prophet, were brainwashed by some evil rulers to believe that their God: the Lord who Created them, who Loved them, and who Saved them, also abandoned them.  And they were convinced or forced to believe that a FALSE god, by the name of Baal, was really their god.

You know, sometimes we can be so LOST and not even know it.

And sometimes it takes a fire from heaven to open our eyes;  that ‘ah hah’ moment, or maybe just an ‘oops’ moment.

Oops, I forgot to thank God before eating.

Oops, I forgot to ask the Lord’s help before tackling that tough problem.

Oops, I forgot to hold my temper before I said something I shouldn’t have.

You see, being Lost can come in all kinds of different forms.

Jesus found that many of the people of His time were quite Lost too.  Misguided by power-hungry religious leaders, they really didn’t know which Way was right and which was simply forced upon them without their even knowing it.

So Jesus gently reset their compass, pointing the Way back to His Father.  Lighting up the right path for them to follow.

“No, God’s commandments had not been changed.”

“Yes, there were still consequences for disobedience.”

And “Hoorah for those who found their Way, and taught that Way to their Lost neighbors.”

You see, white, is really NOT “blue,” although BOTH are equally beautiful.

St. Anthony was a perfect example of one of those guiding lights for the lost.  As a Franciscan Friar, in the same time period as St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony was revered as a preacher and teacher of God’s Truth.  As a matter of fact, St. Francis used St. Anthony to teach Theology to his Friars.

You see, St. Anthony’s intense Love for God and Trust in Jesus helped recover so many lost souls, that he was declared a Doctor of the Church and became the patron saint of the lost.  And the cool part, is that there is nothing but ourselves, holding us back from being the same; when we keep our blues and our whites, our loves and our likes all in their proper perspective!

For those of us who have lost our perspective,
For those of us who have lost our innocence,
For those of us who have lost our independence,
For those of us who have lost peace within our families,
For those of us who have lost civil peace,
For those of us who have lost our trust in others,
For those of us who have lost our virtue,
For those of us who have lost our home,
For those of us who have lost our job,

For those of us who have lost (please add your own particular loss), – ST ANTHONY, PRAY FOR US.

Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,
– HAVE MERCY ON US.
Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,
– HAVE MERCY ON US.
Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world,
– HAVE MERCY ON US.

Let us pray:  All loving God, You have given us in St Anthony the patron of the lost, as an intercessor of those who are in need of Your mercy. Listen to his voice as he calls out to You on our behalf, and grant those things which will help us grow in Your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
– AMEN.
