(St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Religious)
Like a fire there appeared the prophet Elijah whose words were as a flaming furnace. . . .
You were taken aloft in a whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses. You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, to turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Blessed is he who shall have seen you, and who falls asleep in your friendship. Sir_48:1-14
Ahhh, to fall in love with the prophets! In the midst of their cruel and deranged generations, the prophets overcame, the prophets taught, and the prophets gave the example, time after time, of the life and the love of God. Jesus often referred to the prophet’s words in His teachings. And Elijah greeted Jesus in his transfiguration (Mt_17:3). Jesus even referred to John the Baptist as Elijah (Mt_11:13-14), as the messenger, the one who would prepare the way for the Lord (Is_40:3).
When we actually think about it – we might ask, How many testimonies does the world need to finally believe? Jesus IS the Christ, the Savior, the Son of God. And the prophets are there to point our way. Even God, the Father, Himself tells us to “Listen” (Mt_17:5)!
And in our belief, we follow His command, “to Love” (Jn_15:12).
And in our listening, gee, we never know when Elijah, when God the Holy Spirit will be chatting with us through a friend or even a stranger. Listen and Love!
God is there with you always, beloved; lifting and encouraging, strengthening and inspiring YOU to BE Elijah too!
