(Ss. Joachim and Anne – Parents of Blessed Virgin Mary)
Jesus said to his disciples, “blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” Mt_13:10-17
Imagine, as a kid, waiting and patiently waiting for your birthday, for that special gift that you always wanted. And when it finally came you looked in the kitchen, and you looked in the living room, and you looked pretty much everywhere and no present could be found. While all along, there it was, right there on the end of your bed. As they say, “if it had teeth, it could have bitten us.”
This is exactly what Jesus was seeing from the present’s point of view. He WAS/is the present that they (we) had all been waiting for all these long, hard years. The gift of life, the gift of hope, the gift of an answered promise to all those Israelites who worshiped the God of their ancestors. And yet they couldn’t hear His Word. And they didn’t recognize His miracles. And they didn’t appreciate the presence of God in their very midst.
Of course, as always, the question comes back to us, beloved. Would we have been the blind and deaf ones, or would we have understood, every parable, every mighty deed. Maybe God is living somewhere in our everyday lives, beloved, be it at home or work.
Do we recognize him or her?
All we have to do is look and listen!
