(St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church)
A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” . . . Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mt_19:16-22
How hard it is, beloved, for us to give up that which or whom we love more than anything in the world. Jesus gave us all the rules by which we could live a morally right, peace-filled and happy life. But then beyond the day-to-day living, He said if we want to be perfect, we must give up those worldly loves as well, to place Him as our number ONE love. It doesn’t mean we can’t still like, can’t still love those worldly ones, but HE is to be our number one, number one. Place your faith and love in Jesus, beloved, and He will provide all those things in greater abundance than we could ever have provided on our own!
