(31st Sunday Ordinary Time, B)
Moses spoke to the people, saying: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Dt_6:2-6
And Jesus added, “The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mk_12:28b-34
If we consider all of the details of those 10-Commandments that Moses received on the mountain, they can all be summed up in four simple words: Love God and neighbor! When we clear out all the cobwebs of hate and revenge, of pranks and belittling others, of anger and selfishness, of prejudice and comparison, all that should be left is LOVE, beloved. And yes, maybe that all doesn’t sit too well with our world and culture today. But IF what we’re looking for is eternal life, if what we’re looking for is a love relationship that will NEVER fail, then keeping these two simple commandments is all we’ll ever need!
