Jesus was warning his disciples to be very cautious of what the Pharisees were teaching (what they were “feeding” the people). But alone and hungry, the disciples were thinking that they were being chastised for forgetting to bring along some food.
So Jesus said to them, “Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember, when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.” “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?” They answered him, “Seven.” He said to them, “Do you still not understand?” Mk_8:14-21
5, 5, 12, 7, 4, 7! I think they were more confused after that short math lesson than they ever were before that! Maybe, they were thinking, ‘if we add up all those numbers together, maybe then they’ll make more sense.’ And if they did, they’d end up with . . . 40! The good old eternity number. Jesus loves them for all eternity!
And it’s not the food, but the eternal life that Jesus offers, that we need to be concerned about too. Don’t you understand, beloved? Jesus IS the bread of life! And all we NEED – is Him!
So stop worrying about silly mortal stuff, and place your trust in Jesus. He WILL see us through! Count on it!
