(St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Joseph her (Mary’s) husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, (over her unexpected pregnancy) decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.  For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  Mt_1:16,18-21,24a

You’ve got to just love this guy!  Virtuous to a fault!  God could not have chosen anyone better.  A hard worker.  A model and mentor for Jesus.  A loving husband for Mary.  And the perfect namesake for his ancestor Joseph, the son of Jacob (Israel), the dreamer par excellence.  Joseph listened.  Joseph believed. And Joseph remained always faithful to his God and his family.  Today we remember Joseph, Mary’s husband, and we extol him as the perfect model for all fathers!
