(St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven. . . . And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.” Mt_19:23-30
So don’t fret about having, beloved. Because if we didn’t have, we couldn’t give it away, we couldn’t give it up. The trick is not to hoard it, not to worship it, not to hold it in any other regard except that it all belongs to God. And God wants us to have, equally, to have fairly. Be a generous giver, not for the sake of getting 100 times more, but for the sake of pleasing God and maybe being counted worthy enough to enter his kingdom in eternal life!
