(25th Sunday Ordinary Time, C)
Jesus gives us a couple of cool quotes today that are worth citing. He said, “I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Lk_16:1-13
What this infers and does not infer is that we should not be the cause of dishonest wealth, but be familiar with it enough (be friends) to recognize it, to know what it is, where it is and how to avoid being part of it. And in doing so, we will not be guilty of being dishonestly wealthy.
He said, “If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? “ ibid
So BE trustworthy!
And in conclusion, He said, “No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” ibid
Mammon, then, are all those “things” of the world: our cars and homes, and smartphones, our money, our jobs. We are to use these for what they are: to transport us, to shelter us, to bring us information, to feed us and to give us something to keep ourselves busy with (besides prayer), respectively. But we are not to worship them, we are not to “serve” them. We are only here to serve God. And in serving God, all those “things” will be available to assist us in serving Him better. Trust ONLY in God, beloved, and all these things will be given you, as well!
