(Third of Seven ‘O Antiphons’)
“O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay!”
“On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.” Isaiah 11:10
Jesse was the father of King David, and the prophet Micah had prophesied that the Messiah would be of the house and lineage of David and be born in David’s city, Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
There was a certain man from Zorah, of the clan of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren and had borne no children. An angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “Though you are barren and have had no children, yet you will conceive and bear a son.” Jgs_13:2-7,24-25a
And the child’s name was Samson!
In the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the priestly division of Abijah; his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. . . . But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years. . . . And the angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right of the altar of incense. Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. Lk_1:5-25
And he became known as John the Baptist.
And the stories of the past and the stories of the present and the stories of the future slowly unfolded. For in this great, yet obscure little region of the world, something even more miraculous was about to occur in just 6-days . . .
