Jesus said to the unbelieving Pharisees, “if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” Jn_5:31-47
Moses said in Deuteronomy, “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kindred; that is the one to whom you shall listen.” Dt_18:15
Jesus also said through a parable, “Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’” Lk_16:31
It all goes back to that self-centered blindness that every one of us has when we focus too strongly on the wrong “center.” The Pharisees focused so strongly on Moses that even Moses disappeared from their vision of their own righteousness. They were blinded from the truth of the matter, the Truth of Jesus, because He was a threat to their power and fame.
Just makes us ponder, beloved. What threatens us? What puts us on edge about our self-righteousness, about our financial security, about our perfect health? Are we listening for the voice of someone who just might be a little wiser than us? Are we listening for God from maybe the least expected place?
He has been, is and will be there all along. All we need do is listen!
