(St. Luke, Evangelist)
Jesus sent seventy-two of His disciples ahead of Him on mission to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom of God in peace, in healing and in community. He said to them, “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.” Lk_10:1-9
Ever perform a helpful deed or send out a word of love, of peace to another person, beloved, only to have it thrown back in our faces, misconstrued, as an attack or insult? Does it not give us a feeling that our gift, our peace was stolen from us and has left us with anger and hatred instead? Jesus is telling His disciples and us today, not to allow that to happen to us. Instead, if our gift of love and peace is not accepted, know that God sends it back to us. It’s not our fault. It’s not our failure. And we are called then, to dust off the rejection, to move on and offer it to another. When we do find an accepting recipient, then, we are to welcome their hospitality, and gift them even further with the healing of Christ in their lives. Jesus wants all of us to know His healing love. But it can only be known by those who listen and accept it. Just keep on giving, beloved, and you will live in His peace as well!
God bless you!
