Elijah’s Whisper – My Whisper
Then the LORD said (to Elijah), “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD – but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake – but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire – but the LORD was not in the fire. Why are YOU here, beloved?
Was it to discover magnificent colors? Was it to find colorful music or awesome videos? Was it just curiosity? Was it accidental? Were you really looking for God, for Hope, for true LOVE somewhere in this menagerie we call the web?
Or were you just hiding in a cave, waiting on the Lord to Whisper in your ear – a Word – LIFE! Life, it’s in You! And YOU are beautiful in the Eyes of God, no matter what the world may say or think.
You are Loved!!
Every day the Lord whispers in our ears – Words of HOPE, Words of LOVE, and maybe not even words – just His JOY in our hearts.

(The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

Mary’s visitation to her cousin Elizabeth – a sign of respect, a sign of love, a confirmation, a respite. And in the process a two humble prayers of thanks to our awesome God: our “Hail Mary” and the Magnificat (the Canticle of Mary). Thank you Mary for saying yes to God, to Jesus. Thank you Elizabeth for raising John the Baptist. And thank you God for loving us so!!!

Jesus said, “I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice,
and no one will take your joy away from you.” Jn 16:20-23
Ice cream is a pretty wonderful joy. My grandma’s cooking was a pretty wonderful joy – we actually used to wonder how we would ever survive without it. Riding a roller coaster, skiing a downhill slope, bowling a 215 game and watching the birth of our children are all incredible joys (to some of us). But ALL of these joys come to an end! Diabetes kills ice cream, death takes grandma, bad hearts and muscles may keep us from roller coasters and skiing. And kids grow up.
Yet, NO ONE can take away the joy of Jesus. Paul was imprisoned and kept on singing. The saints were brutally martyred and kept on praising. Even the apostles were killed for their faith, yet they never lost the Joy of Jesus.
He is our hope and our salvation.
Jesus IS our JOY!

Jesus said to his disciples: “A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me.” Jn 16:16-20
Just like the smell of baking pastries can bring us back 50-years to our grandmother’s house and all the joys of our Sunday, family gatherings, this particular Scripture verse, John 16:16, brings me back to my 7th grade yearbook signing. It was the year we had to undertake that horrific 6-needled TB Tine injection; one of those traumatic events of my life. Good grief!
But yearbook signing day was much more fun. The funny thing was, that one guy I knew fairly well, wrote one simple, cryptic scribble that just about drove me crazy. He wrote “Jn 16:16.” And I hadn’t a clue! So, soon as I got home, I dug out my mom’s huge, old Bible and looked it up.
Quite creative! The guy really new his Scriptures! And in writing that, I immediately knew his meaning for Jesus’ quote. We were about to embark on summer vacation and wouldn’t see each other for a couple months, but then, when the new school year began, we would see each other again. Cute!
The disciples didn’t have a clue as to what Jesus meant either. So he explained, in slightly less, but still cryptic words: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.” ibid You see Jesus was about to be killed. But after three days, He would also be Resurrected, and the disciples would see Him again. And out of the grief of their loss, they would be filled with the Joy of His return. It’s the same joy that we will have when we are reunited with our lost loved ones, one day in heaven.
And together we will live for ETERNITY,
in the peace and love of Jesus!

(St. Mary Ann of Jesus of Paredes)
St. Paul, speaking to the people of Athens about God said, ‘In him we live and move and have our being,’ Acts 17:15-18:1
St. Paul, in many ways, was a very persuasive and diplomatic teacher. He was filled with the Spirit of Truth and Understanding, the Spirit of Courage and Wisdom, that Jesus said – all of His disciples would inherit from Him. And we can see these Gifts of the Holy Spirit, today, in Paul’s discourse to the philosophers of Athens.
You see, Paul had already been beaten, imprisoned and exiled from town-after-town that he visited. And yet, he never gave up. So there in Athens, where the people believed in many gods, where the leaders were always attentive to new philosophies and yet were keenly skeptical of frauds, they listened to Paul who sprinkled new life into the emptiness of their own theology.
He taught them that God not only created every one of them, but that He will also be their Judge. And he told them that God’s judgment time was near. And after he was done with all of this persuasive introduction, Paul finally brought up the most controversial topic for the Athenian philosophers, as well as for many people even today: he talked about the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death.
It was the fine-line that separated the open-minded from those with closed and hardened hearts. As Jesus said himself, “they just could not bear it.” Jn 16:12-15
And yet for some of those places, the seeds of conversion were planted. In town-after-town, that Paul had visited, and from which he was hastily banished, he left those seeds of conversion, people, through which the Holy Spirit could begin His work. This is the work of Truth and the work of Love that God has for every one of us, and we have for one another.
You see, brothers and sisters in Christ, the Resurrection of Jesus not only proved His divinity, but it opened up for us – a whole new reason for Hope, a whole new reason for living every day in praise of our God who created us to share His love forever.
And that is what it means to be Christian!

We have heard it said that salvation will come to those who believe. Paul was on the road to perdition when a shocking revelation brought him belief. And in his belief not even beatings and imprisonment could keep him from singing praises to His Lord. When the Lord saved him from the chains of bondage through the rattling of an earthquake, it was enough of a shocking revelation that even his jailor was converted to belief in Jesus. He said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.” Acts 16:22-34
BELIEF brings SALVATION!
Jesus IS Lord.
He is our light and our salvation!

Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.” Jn 15:26-16:4a
We too will testify, beloved, because the Holy Spirit dwells within us. We will tell of the marvelous things Jesus has done in our lives. And even when those lives had some rough times, we will tell how He saved us as well. He always saves those who love Him, because He loves us so deeply.
Years later, the disciples and St. Paul also testified the stories of their remembrance. And there were some who listened intently to them. And from their listening, they too became His disciples, zealous to testify their own stories of salvation.
There was “a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, who listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying.” Acts 16:11-15
Today is the day – we ‘remember’, Memorial Day. We remember those who came before us and gave their lives to keep us free to worship our Lord and God. We listened to their stories and we give thanks for the great love they shared. Just as our Savior, Jesus Christ had done, FOR US!

Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” Jn 14:15-21
The Holy Spirit will be with us always, beloved. We will never be orphans. No fire, nor hurricane, no tornado, nor divorce, no breakup, no downsizing – that the world has to offer can EVER leave us orphans, because WE have the Holy Spirit with us ALWAYS! What consolation! What Hope we have because of Jesus Christ! Therefore, do not be disheartened, beloved. For our hope is always in the Lord who is our LIFE and our SALVATION!

Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” Jn 15:18-21
What is it, beloved, that is “of” the world that has it’s grip onto us? Is it money or food, is it job or position, is it even other people who possess us. Jesus says that we do not belong to the world, but to Him. And He loves us so much more than the world does that all we have to do is place out trust wholly in Him and He will see us through any difficulties we have with money or job or even other people.
Trust in Jesus, beloved, for He has conquered the world!

Jesus said to his disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jn 15:12-17
Jesus, in John’s Gospel, has been concentrating on teaching His disciples about the Love of God and His Love both of God and of them. He talks about how He is “in” the Father and the Father is in Him and that everyone can be “in” Jesus IF they keep his commandments. Today, His commandment is defined – LOVE one another. How could we love Jesus if we don’t love one another? Jesus is within every one of us. So if we don’t love one another, then we’re simultaneously not loving Jesus.

Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete.” Jn 15:9-11
Touched by God. St. Rita, against all odds, the Saint of the impossible, kept Jesus’ commandment and loved, even when love was difficult. When we remain in God’s love, even when the times may be difficult – Jesus will see that our Joy is complete! Hang in there beloved. Stay close to Jesus. Keep His commandment of Love and maybe someday you too will be touched by God in Joy, just as St. Rita was.

Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” Jn 15:1-8
Ever try to boil water without a heat source? Without fire, without electricity for a hotplate, without the sun, it is practically impossible. Jesus used the vine as a similar example. If a branch is cut off the vine there will be no fruit. It just won’t work!
Jesus is the source of everything we do. When we rely upon Him, even when things don’t work out exactly the way we want them to, there will be “fruit,” because – all things work to good for those who Believe!
So the next time we feel like we’re struggling, remember our source, remember Jesus, and ask that we may see the point of it all, and then carry on – for all WILL be well when Jesus is our source and when we stay connected!

(Fifth Sunday of Easter, A)
St. Peter said, “Beloved: Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Pt 2:4-9
Living Stones!
Through our belief, we become One with Jesus. We are the Holy Offering, when we offer ourselves for Him.
And in doing so we become a part of the royal priesthood of Jesus.
We bring life to those whom we touch: by our love, by our caring, and by our just being that living stone – unbreakable, strong, the foundation of Life.
St. Peter said, “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Pt 2:4-9
Jesus said, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.” Jn 14:1-12
Belief leads to priesthood, leads to works, leads to stability, brings us home to our heavenly dwelling place.

Jesus said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” Jn 14:7-14
Notice, beloved, that Jesus didn’t say so that “you” may be glorified. He didn’t even say so that “I,” Jesus, may be glorified. He said so that the Father may be glorified. Whatever we ask of Jesus must always be asked for the purpose of glorifying the Father, in Jesus’ Name. This healing, this miracle, this homily, this incident of good fortune is all and only possible because of God the Father who loves us so much that He will do anything for us – WHEN we ask it in recognition and through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Praise the Lord, in all His works!

Jesus said, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” Jn 14:1-6
Sojourners in a foreign land. This is how St. Paul refers to us in this earthly, worldly life. This is not our true home. And Jesus goes the next step in telling His disciples and us that HE will prepare a place for us in our TRUE homes – our dwelling place with God. And He will take us there and reside with us forever.
Did you ever mistakenly try to make a home out of something or somewhere, a profession, or a job, or even a person, only to find something better, or have them fire you, or leave you all alone again? THIS is NOT our true Home beloved! It’s not a place, or a feeling, or comfort. It’s not drugs or money or power or fame.
Our call in this life is to do the best we can with what we have, to help and love others, but never make them our gods or our homes. Our home is coming. We are preparing the way to make it back there – with God and with Jesus. Listen to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and BE ready, for we will be there soon, beloved! And we will be together, forever!

Jesus said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.” Jn 13:16-20
In one sense or another we all have masters. If not our bosses at work, our spouses, even our children are at times our masters. But above all God is our true master. We are not God and can never be so. If we understand this then there is a whole new respect within our hearts. A respect that goes not only to God, to Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, but to our brothers and sisters as well; from the poorest street beggar to the high-rise executive. They are all God’s children. THEY may not all realize it. But that’s where we come in, beloved. Through OUR love, they can be saved. Because that love is the love of God in us.
By our understanding, we WILL be blessed! May our loving God bless you always, beloved, with peace and hope and generosity!

(St. Matthias, Apostle)
Peter and the other apostles prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the Eleven Apostles. Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
Jesus said, “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.” Jn 15:9-17
It’s always a good idea, brothers and sisters in Christ, to keep our perspective of who is calling whom. Jesus tells us that it is not we who are calling Him, but the other way around. We are the ones who listen for that call, or are sometimes “knocked off our horse” like St. Paul, to be given the message of our call.
The apostles whom Jesus had chosen had lost one of their valued members, Judas. And in keeping with the Scriptures, Peter knew that a replacement needed to be found. But he didn’t take it upon himself to make that selection. Instead, along with all the other Apostles, they prayed to God to do the choosing for them. And God chose Matthias.
It was a mission of Love. And following Jesus’ commandment to love one another, the Apostles did not choose by human, judgmental, selection. Rather out of their love for God and each other, Matthias was chosen over Barsabbas by God’s reasoning alone. It didn’t mean that Barsabbas was any less worthy. It just meant that Barsabbas would be chosen by God for something even greater.
If we ever get that feeling of being passed over when we thought we deserved or earned some great reward, then, instead of resentment, it just might be our time to pray to God to discover His greater Call for us. A call founded in Love and lasting for eternity.

Jesus said to the unbelieving Jews, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.” Jn 10:22-30
We hear His voice because we’re listening. We follow Him because we would like to go where He is going. We know Him because we study all there is to know about Him, we accept the Holy Spirit’s guidance who teaches us about Him and we pray in communication with Him. And in return, as one of His sheep, we are given the gift of eternal life. We will not perish and we will never be taken from His bosom. Quite a deal for simply listening and believing! And His call is out to everyone. The question is, how many are catching the Whispers?

When life has gotten us down to that desert place.
When we so long for something different.
When we long for someone who really cares.
They won’t be found in the new cars, or in the new games,

They won’t be found in the attention crime gets us.
They won’t even be found within ourselves.
Only God can fill the void that longs to be filled
within our hearts.
And when our souls find God, we will have found LIFE.
And then we will have found Jesus,
the living stream through whom it finally
all makes sense!

(Fourth Sunday of Easter, A)
Jesus said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.” . . .
“Whoever enters through me will be saved,” . . .
“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” Jn 10:1-10
Jesus is the GOOD Shepherd.
He loves us. He cares for us. He feeds us. He saves us.
If you’re a parent – you know the feeling, because that’s how we “shepherd” our children. And we know how they so struggle to escape from us, to be independent. But come the least bit of trouble and they’re back in a flash. Jesus doesn’t want us just to come back when we’re in trouble. He wants us all the time, beloved. When we follow Him, all the time, we’ll discover a much more abundant life – in every way.
It’s the Life of God in us.
It’s the life of Love!

After hearing Jesus’ words about being the Bread of Life, about eating His Body and drinking His Blood, many of His followers left Him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Jn 6:60-69
How strongly, how deeply do we believe, beloved? Are Jesus’ words too bitter, too demanding, too difficult to do? When we can put all those feelings of ‘self’ aside, and allow the Love of Jesus to permeate our entire being, then all the bitterness, all the defensiveness and all the anger towards others who slighted us, will dissolve away, and all that will be left is Love and belief!
Could you live with that, beloved?

Three interesting quotes struck me in our first reading today from the Book of Acts.
“Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, . . . fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ He said, ‘Who are you, sir?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go . . .’” Acts 9:1-20
Can we not stick just about any name there in the place of “Saul, Saul“? Might it even be our own name! “Why are you persecuting me?” We hear the Lord’s Name used in movies, in books, on the radio, on television – and it’s not always used in a reverential or even a very kind way. Jesus tells us also, “NOW GET UP AND GO!” Let me out of this place, this mindset of persecution. And let me find the place of PEACE, the place of HEALING, the place of LOVE – Jesus!

The second quote from the same reading came from Ananias’ response to the Lord’s calling:
“the Lord said to him in a vision, ‘Ananias.’
He answered, ‘Here I am, Lord.’“
Whereas Saul answered “Who are you?” Ananias answered “Here I am.” The difference between KNOWING the Lord and not. How do we answer the Lord when we’re called? Ananias wasn’t real happy with his assignment, knowing Saul had a pretty bad reputation with ‘Christians’. But he obediently responded – and a new Saint was born – St. Paul!

The third quote was just kind of a funny reflection. Ananias said to Saul, “‘Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ Immediately things like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight.” It just reminded me of a recent eye doctor appointment I had, where my (daughter) eye doctor gave me the opportunity of trying out contacts. Now, my eyes are pretty bad. I have 4 vision levels: far, closer, reading and micro. And it seems the contacts will correct one of them. I can see ‘closer’, pretty good and ‘reading’ is not bad at all. But ‘far’ is better than, but not quite as good as glasses. And my micro (without glasses) is just gone! So imagine if Jesus, after glaring one of those super LED flashlights in Saul’s face, quickly inserted a couple of wrongly prescribed contacts in Saul’s eyes (on purpose) to totally screw up his eyesight. That would have surely scared him enough to never want to profane Jesus’ Name again. Then he simply had Ananias get the contacts back out. Boy, I have a hard enough time getting them in. And sometimes they even feel like they’re going to fall out by themselves. Whah-lah, the “scales” fell out of Saul’s eyes and all 4 levels of sight are back again!
Maybe silly – but who knows!!!

Jn 6:44-51
It’s called The Bread of Life Discourse. Jesus relates how the “manna” in the desert of Moses prefigured the “true” bread from heaven which will feed those who partake and believe with “eternal life.” Jesus is that “bread.” He gave His life for all. And He continues to give the Flesh of His body and His life blood to those who believe – we call this the Eucharist – our thanksgiving gift from God, our gift from Jesus. Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life. And He says, “Come.”

For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.” Jn 6:35-40
So belief equals resurrection and eternal life.
Now that’s something worth believing!
And in the believing, there is transformation.
We become what we believe!
And that’s something worth becoming!

Jesus’ disciples said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he (Jesus) spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” Lk 24:13-35
Disappointment, Revelation, Surprise, Joy!
These were just some of the emotions that the disciples were experiencing as the Truth of the Resurrection of Jesus became a reality to them. Could you just imagine, beloved. It’s inconceivable! And yet, it’s true. And now, He’s here with us.
Let us open these hearts that are burning with His Love!

When the disciples and Jesus were overwhelmed by a huge crowd who came to listen to Jesus, He asked how they were going to feed that many people.
Andrew said to Jesus, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish;” Jn 6:1-15
Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.
And when they were finished, the disciples filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.
St. Athanasius devotedly fought against a philosophy called Arianism, which proposed that Jesus was not truly divine. Yet this very story not only illustrated Jesus’ divinity through the multiplication of loaves that fed thousands of people, but to prove the point, Jesus had his disciples collect the fragments left over, which were more than they even started with.
You see, the people didn’t take their own dinners with them before they got there to nullify the miracle. The people didn’t refuse to eat what was offered them, to leave left overs that were never taken. They had as much as they wanted –
they were FULL.
All of those details were included in the Scripture to PROVE the Divinity of Jesus. And the same can be said of His healings, His walking on water, His resurrection from death and His ascension into heaven. Those who try to rationalize and excuse away the Miraculous intervention of Jesus with nature and mankind are simply the Arians of our time.
You see, beloved, Jesus said that Eternal Life is for those who believe! Don’t let them confuse you. You KNOW the truth! Trust in that inner voice – it’s the Holy Spirit opening the gates of Eternity for you!

The high priest of the Sanhedrin ordered the Apostles to stop teaching in the Name of Jesus, to which Peter replied, “We must obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:27-33
The Apostles were doing the Works of God, just as Jesus asked them. They were zealous in what they believed, and they also remembered Jesus’ words: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.” Jn 3:31-36
Life or wrath of God?
Sounds like a pretty simple choice!
